After a certain period of time, your products are likely to build up bacteria if not discarded.

Here are some general rules of thumb:

Mascara - 2 - 3 months

Liquid Products - 3 - 4 months

Lipstick - 6 months

Cream Products (eye shadows, blushes, highlighters, bronzers) - 6 - 9 months.

Powder Products (eye shadows, blushes, bronzers, highlighters, facial powders) - 9 - 12 months.

Pencils - 2 years if sharpened regularly.

If the consistency of any product changes or starts to smell then get rid of it. Cosmetics are built to have a shelf life of anywhere between one year and three years - you don't know when you purchase how long into the shelf life the product is. Stick to the general guidelines and you should be fine!Do soap/cosmetic products ever go bad?
The only cosmetic items that ever go bad are anything with an SPF in it, because they do expire overtime. Mascara it is highly recommended to replace every 3 months, but hey sometimes I keep mine for 5 months and it still works well for me!
absolutely!! On the make of make up and stuff like that

there is usually a little symbol which looks like a tub, and its got a number on it, thats the number of months you should keep it!
